Three Gorges Travel: Chongqing to Yichang

4 DAYS/3 NIGHTS DOWNSTREAM ITINERARY

DAY 1

Depart Chongqing - 9:00 pm: Sail from picturesque Chongqing, the “Mountain City”.

DAY 2

Shibaozhai - Take a shore excursion to Shibaozhai, with its impressive wooden pagoda, appropriately named “The Pearl of the Yangtze”. Depending on river conditions, an alternate excursion may be substituted to Fengdu, visiting the new relocation village built for families who have moved as a result of the Yangtze’s rising waters brought about by the Three Gorges Dam. Additional optional Shore Excursion to Fengdu’s “Ghost City” (river conditions permitting), known for its statues of ghosts and devils on Mingshan Hill. (B, L, D)

DAY 3

Enter the Three Gorges/“Small Gorges”/Shiplocks

Enter the Three Gorges, one of nature’s most extraordinary sculptures. Today you will pass through the first two—Qutang Gorge and Wu Gorge. Qutang Gorge is the shortest (5 miles), narrowest (500 feet), and most dramatic. The 25-mile long Wu Gorge is known for its quiet beauty, forest-covered mountains, and cliffs so sheer that the sun barely penetrates the precipices. Transfer to another vessel for a relaxing excursion through the attractive gorges of Goddess Stream. Depending on river conditions, an alternate excursion may be substituted to the gorges of Shennong Stream. Enter Xiling Gorge, the longest (41 miles), and the deepest of the Three Gorges. In the evening, sail through the Three Gorges Dam ship locks. Additional optional Shore Excursion to White Emperor City (river conditions permitting), an ancient city overlooking the western end of Qutang Gorge. (B, L, D)

Three Gorges Dam/Yichang - Morning visit to the Three Gorges Dam at Sandouping, the largest in the world. Arrive Yichang in late morning and disembark. (B)

Depart Yichang - 9:00 pm: Sail from Yichang, the economic and cultural center of western Hubei Province.

DAY 2

Three Gorges Dam/Xiling Gorge - Morning visit to the Three Gorges Dam at Sandouping, the largest in the world. Later sail through the Three Gorges Dam ship locks. Sail through Xiling Gorge, the longest (41 miles), and the deepest of the Three Gorges.

Additional optional Tribe of the Three Gorges Shore Excursion (river conditions permitting), offering an interesting glimpse into life in the Xiling Gorge region. (B, L, D)

DAY 3

“Small Gorges”/Wu Gorge/Qutang Gorge

Transfer to another vessel for a relaxing excursion through the attractive gorges of Goddess Stream. Depending on river conditions, an alternate excursion may be substituted to the gorges of Shennong Stream. Enter Wu Gorge, known for its quiet beauty, forest-covered mountains, and cliffs so sheer that the sun barely penetrates the precipices. "Three Gorges Dam Project" is the short term for the water control project on Yangtze River. It is located in the middle section of Xiling Gorge near Sandouping Town in Yichang City, Hubei Province. Being the world's largest hydropower project, this dam has created many "Firsts" such as the most efficient dam in flood control, the most difficult construction work and the largest migration project in the world.

Located in the Xiling Gorge of Yichang city, between Three-Gorges Dam and the Gezhouba Dam, covering an area of 140,000 square kilometers, Three-Gorges Tribe Scenic Spot has well known of the primitive folk culture as well as its picturesque landscape of wild streams, peculiar rocks, deep valley, fascinating cave and clear water and spring. Three-Gorges tribe scenic spot consists of three villages including the village on the water, the Brook-Side Village, the Mountain Village and other attractions.

1. Village on the Water

Meaning of inhabit on the water, villagers here are fishing for living at the juncture between the Longjin Brook and Yangtze River. Although their living condition is improved with better economic condition, the fishing custom has passing from generation to generation. Sailing a wooden ship with white sweep, casting nets in the clear water, stirring the green water reflection of mountains and trees under the blue sky, it seems that it is afar life in ancient time but truly happen and remain in Yangtze River of Yichang in China.

2. Stream-Side Tribe

As one part of Three-Gorges tribe, the stream-side tribe inhabit along stream and against mountains in Yangtze River area, living with both fishing and farming. The village is embracing by dense forest and facing for the clear stream. Stilted buildings are setting randomly in village hanging with red peppers, yellow corns, palm-bark rain cape and bamboo hat.

3. Mountain-top tribe

Because of the steep landscape of mountain area, tribe on the mountain top has created a special stilted building which was called by the modern architects as “building with railing style”. The buildings are mostly constructed by wood, setting against mountains and strutting with pillars with corridor on the side and balcony in the behind. The building is usually two floors or three floors; first floors for raising livestock or storage; second floors and three floors for living. Walking along the old stilted buildings, tourists can notice the struggle between local people and nature as well as conform to nature to created nice life in optimistic attitude.

4. The Stone Tablet

It is said that the stone tablet on south river of Yangtze River is the first stone tablet in China in height of about 32 meters, width of 13 meters, thick in 4 meters and weight of 4,300 tons.  

5. The Shadow-play Stones

 The Shadow-play Stones consist of four stones are famous because of the vivid shadow-play under sunset similar to four main characters in classic novel “Journey to the West” which is well known by all Chinese people. Among four of them, the biggest stone, called as Shaseng stone, has reputed as the “first stone in Yangtze River”, standing on the mountain peak as a large mushroom on the surface of only 200 square centimeters in more than 100 tons, which is rare in the world.

6.  Boatman Performance

The performance presents the working scene of fishing and other part of life along Yangtze River with unique folk music. One of the most impression parts of the show would be roaring of boatmen, which was called as “Haozi” in Chinese. It is forceful and primitive calling showing the hard life of boatmen in past. 

Besides the above sight spots, Three-Gorges Tribe Scenic Spot is also including nature attraction of King Ba Palace, Qinying Waterfall, Seven Piles Spring, The Monkey Mountain, The Longxi Bridge, The Moon-Inviting Pavilion, Longjin Brook Wharf, and Yellow Dragon Fall.
